Art In Action 2012

Art in Action 2012- I exhibited and demonstrated my textiles at this lovely show at Waterperry House, Oxford.

All kitted out in my wellies for the show. The grounds were sodden, but everyone remained undeterred and in high spirits. Almost felt like being at a music festival.

So on day 1, I was kitted out in my wellies.

I invited people to tag the place they travelled from to Art in Action on the British Map quilt. What a wonderful variety of visitors- we had someone all the way from Orkney Islands, from Glasgow, from York, North Wales, Dorset. FAB!

The Textiles Tent

The organisers put a wonderful show of music and dance performances together for the exhibiting artists. It felt so special!
There was Flamenco, performed by Spanish artists for us

All exhibiting artists were treated to a lovely sit-down dinner by the organisers. Here are my fellow Textile artists.

There were food stalls serving all sorts of yumminess and 400 artists demonstrating everything from glass blowing to painting

Come and say hello at Art in Action

I would like to invite you to Art in Action, where I would be demonstrating map quilts & exhibiting handwoven cashmere and silk scarves in bold joyful colours from 19-22 July at the Textiles Tent.

Inspired by the simple principle that people are fascinated when artists and craftsmen openly demonstrate their skills and discuss their work, Art in Action was born 35 years ago. Today Art in Action welcomes approximately 25,000 people over four days. Visitors come to learn, buy and enjoy the exhibitions, classes and performances of 400 demonstrating artists, designer makers, teachers, musicians and performers.”

The Weekend Culture Edit

Saw two of my favourite artists today- Anita Klein and Alighero Boetti. Anita Klein's new linocuts are on show at the Menier gallery.

'Poppies' by Anita Klein

Anita spoke of the inspiration behind her work and how she strives to achieve a sense of harmony in her compositions, something akin to placing the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle together till they all fit and feel right, she said.

The audience was entranced. Me included. :)
I bought the catalogue, which Anita very kindly signed for me. I can't tell you how thrilled I am!

Then we strolled over the Tate Modern and saw Alighiero Boetti: Game Plan

The embroidered maps are phenomenal!

The sheer scale of the work is awe-inspiring. This piece covers the whole wall and is intricately embroidered in tiny stitches. I wish I had better pictures.

These maps were embroidered at Boetti's commission by Afghani embroiderers and have text in Italian, English and Arabic.

Cross stitch map

These mathematical, grid inspired rugs were so beautiful.

And finally finished the day with coffee and cake and the best view in town.

Colours of my parents' garden

I am starting to work on new collections and colour stories for 2012. I've dug out these pictures of my visit to my parents place in India back in December. Their garden was full of blooms in every possible colour. Bougainvilleas, daisies, roses and even some cabbage. I want to infuse the warm sunshine and intense colours in my work.
